Question: Please help convince my mom to let me get a guinea pig!?

Answer #1:

The cons of guinea pigs are the nail clipping. Also, something that is good to keep in mind is that you can be allergic to guinea pigs. I am allergic to them but not to cats or dogs. I didn't find out until I had already got a little piggie. I was supposed to get her little half-sister a few weeks later but my allergies were so bad that I ended up having to find her another home. Luckily I found her a good one but the allergy aspect was something I didn't know was going to be a factor. Hope this helps and good luck.

Honestly...$250 is definately enough to stat off your guinea pigs. If you buy them from a pet store they're about $30 ea. But you should adopt, and there are plenty out there. You can also build your own cage for about $40. That's what I did. :)

You did your research, so you do seem responsible. It won't just be an impulse. Just realize they can live a long time.
and although vet fees aren't bad, they will be if they get sick. so you need to take very good care of them. You seem enthusiastic, so I don't think that will be a problem.

The one thing I would tell you is to wait until your home life is settled before getting them. They don't like fast movement, loud noises, sudden changes, you get the picture. As for your dads on weekends, you could build a smaller cage maybe and just keep it there (ask him of course). It really depends on the piggies' personality...they might hate the move and they might love it, you'll just have to test that out.

Don't press your mom further right now, just try and do some things around the house (laundry, dishes, sweep, dust) without asking, to show her you can do the work and realize what needs done. You could also check out some library books and tell your mother to read them (big hit with my mom years ago...and they are all only about 16-30 pages long).

I can also tell her they DO NOT smell. As long as you keep their cage clean like you are supposed to they clean themselves. They never need baths but you might notice they start to smell a bit like their hay, sort of musky, and you can give them one. Just make sure they are COMPLETELY dry when you put them in their cage. You should also warm up a water bottle and put it where they like to rest. They are prone to colds, which are very difficult to make them go away.

If you have any more questions, you can e-mail I don't mind.
Even when/if you get your piggies.

Good luck!

Answer #3:

Pros:
1.They live for quite some time. Mine lived for 6 years
2.They are super sweet and cuddly(:
3. They don't take up too much room
Cons:
1. They are REALLY loud
2. Their cages need to be cleaned regularly (if you don't it really stinks. And cleaning them is pretty nasty to some).
3.Hair everywhere(like a Chihuahua)
4. Might get mites
5.Some do bite.

I know more cons then pros but they are really great pets and i loved mine until the day he died(:
Hope i helped(:
